Terry Garbutt

The Terry Garbut Memorial Award

(Founder of the Alumni Association)

Garbutt-200

This Award is given in remembrance of Terry Garbutt, who attended Port Credit Secondary School in the late fifties. He was an all round sportsman, an avid sports fan, an NHL calibre hockey player, as well as a scratch golfer. He was a success in the business world as well, as a manager at the TD Bank and the VP of Finance and Administration at ATC Frost.

He was always involved with people in the communities where he lived. In 2001 he was the founding Chair of the PCSS Alumni Association Committee and almost singlehandedly was the driving and sustaining force in its activities for nine years. The purpose of this organization, which so engaged him, was to keep in touch with old school friends through the venue of the Annual May Alumni Night, and to use the financial proceeds to fund school projects with emphasis on supporting scholarships for current students. He was well suited to the role of Committee Chair, as Terry loved people, and spent endless hours networking

Amongst those friends and schoolmates he knew from years ago, long before Facebook became popular. He seemed to know something about everybody and was always interested in hearing from any and all Alumni.

Tragically, Terry passed away in January 2010, but his work is being carried on by the very group he created. This scholarship is being given by the Alumni Association Committee on behalf of all PCSS Alumni to honour his memory and the legacy he has left behind. The irony of having a memorial scholarship awarded in his name, by the very organization he founded to do such work, would no doubt amaze and amuse him. For those who knew him the selection criteria to choose the award winner is largely a reflection of Terry's personality.

Award amount: $750.00
